WIND FARMS

We have all seen those majestic rows of wind turbines either on the news or in person but many of us wonder how exactly is it that they harness power. Contrary to popular belief a wind turbine operates in the exact opposite way that a standard household fan does. Rather than using electricity to create wind flow, wind turbines are used to create electricity to power common household objects like, fans.

Wind farms are typically established in coastal areas because of the constant breeze that these areas experience. The blades or propellers on a wind turbine turn when wind passes through the wind farm and that spins a shaft that connects to a generator. The generator uses a magnetic field to convert the energy created by the propeller's rotation into electricity. After the energy is converted to electricity it is outputted to a transformer that then converts it to the appropriate voltage for distribution.

Wind turbines also have instruments attached to them that measure the wind speed and direction. This enables the towers to change direction so that they can face in the same direction in which the wind is blowing. Wind turbines are also fitted with brakes so that they can be switched off in the vent of high winds. This prevents them from becoming damaged. Different wind farms use different types of turbines, generators and safety systems but this is the basic set-up.
