SOLAR ENERGYSolar energy has been around for a long-time and many people have converted their homes to take advantage of the many benefits associated with using solar energy. Most of us have seen homes and other buildings that have solar panels on them, but many people are unaware of the exact technology that makes them work. Solar panels harnesses the energy from the sun to create electricity to power homes and businesses. Solar energy uses photovoltaic systems, also known as PV's to convert sunlight into energy. A PV cell is made up of two layers of semi conducting material. When light shines on the PV cell it creates an electric field across these layers which causes electricity to flow. PV's only require daylight, they do not require direct sunlight. The PV cells still work on a cloudy day, they just conduct more energy on days in which they have a greater concentration of direct sunlight. PV cells can be used on any home or building that has a roof or wall that faces within 90 degrees south with no obstructing trees or buildings. When placed on a home or building the PV cells gather energy in the form of a direct current or DC. This must be converted to an alternating current or AC for common usage purposes. This is done when the direct current is sent through an inverter. After the DC is converted to an AC it can then be used by households and businesses.
