GEOTHERMAL ENERGYWhen it comes to the topic of renewable energy, geothermal energy is one of the lesser discussed methods of renewable energy. This powerful source of renewable energy is right beneath our feet and it has the potential to provide clean power to the masses. Many people have heard of geothermal energy but because it isn't as popular a topic as other forms of renewable energy they don't know exactly how it works. There are three methods in which geothermal energy is captured from the earth. These methods would include, dry steam, flash steam and binary cycle. All of these methods tap into the naturally occurring hydrothermal convection system within the Earth's crust. This happens when cooler water seeps into the Earth's crust, heats up and rises to the surface. Geothermal energy processes capture the steam and use it to power electric generators. All three methods of harnessing geothermal energy require the power planets to drill holes into rock to capture the steam. The most simple method of harnessing geothermal energy is the dry steam method. In this method the steam from the ground goes directly into a turbine and then to a condenser where it is condensed to water. The flash steam method uses extremely hot water is pressurized into steam and it is then used to power the turbine. In the binary method hot water is passed through a heat exchanger and that heats a second liquid. The second liquid that is used is chosen because it boils at a lower temperature than water. This enables it to be converted to steam faster to power the turbine.
