ALTERNATIVE FUELS

Alternative or unconventional fuels are making a big impact on the marketplace in recent years. Due to both an increasing concern for the environment and a sharp rise in the costs of conventional fossil fuels, more and more people are looking elsewhere to fulfill their need for energy.

Biodiesel and ethanol are probably the two leaders in this field but there are many other alternatives out there. Electricity can be stored in battery cells to create a fuel alternative, hydrogen can be used, and there are many other biomass fuels that are available as well.

Using biomass for fuel involves using either living or dead biological matter that can be burnt to create energy. Popular plants which can be used to create fuel include corn, hemp and sugarcane.

In contrast, biodiesel is made by modifying vegetable oil until it is in a state suitable for a regular diesel vehicle. Regular biodiesel can be mixed with regular diesel, however straight vegetable oil can also be used if the vehicle has been modified for it. Battery cells that convert electricity can also be used as fuel sources.

Hydrogen is being used around the world as an alternate fuel, with fuel cells being used to capture the chemical energy stored in the hydrogen. The production of alternative fuels is having huge effects on the world energy market, with new technologies and industries being developed to keep up with the demand.
